Abstract

A closure for a metallurgical vessel, particularly a melting or temperature maintaining furnace, comprises at least one base plate and a displaceable closure plate together with a cover plate. The orifices in the plates are neutrally aligned during casing. At least one of the plates has a connection at one of its ends to an electric supply source. This plate forms an electrical heating resistance while the electricity source is also connected to the plate at a position opposite to the other connection or within or external to the liquid metal, the vessel and/or the liquid metal serving to supply current. The casting closure can be applied to any vessel and avoids premature solidification of the liquid metal during closure.
