Abstract

A first layer of epoxide, phenolic or polyester resin is applied to a smooth metallic surface, and baked. A fluorinated resin layer is then applied which is made up of the resin applied in the first layer, but modified so that it contains >=20 wt. % of F. This can best be effected by partially replacing several of the starting materials of the prim. resin by their fluorinated analogues. Alkyd resins and their fluorinated analogues are partic. pref. The process is useful for coating smooth metallic surfaces such as stainless steel and Al, to provide protection against corrosion, partic. in the chemical industry. It is also useful in hydraulic systems, because energy losses are considerably reduced. Protection of metallic cladding against the weather and atmospheric pollution is another application. Not only does the coating impart oleophobic and hydrophobic properties to the surface, but it also has excellent adherence.
