Abstract

An iron-aluminium alloy, which is resistant to molten glass, has the compsn. (by wt.) 8-12% Al, 46-92% Fe, 0-1% Mn, 0-1% Si, 0-0.5% C, 0-46% Ni or Co and traces of Mo, W, V, Zr and Ce. It is used for tools and casting tubes for handling molten glass. The alloy forms a very thin alumina layer on its surface to provide provide protection against corrosion and diffusion of the iron into the glass. It has low cost and allows glass residues to detach easily on cooling. These residues can be recycled directly because they will not colour molten glass. Pref. the alloy contains 10% Al and 0-0.18% C. The alloy may contain Ni substituting for part of the Fe, or Cr substituting for part of or in addn. to Al.
