Abstract
Process for bonding an article made of metal flouride to an article made of glass, ceramic or metal comprises (1) placing a bonding element of Al, Al alloy, In or In alloy between the surfaces to be bonded; (2) heating to a temp. sufficient to promote bonding but below the transition temp. of the metal flouride, the softening pt. of the glass or ceramic, and the m. pt. of the metal; and (3) pressing the parts to be bonded together to cause strong plastic deformation of the bonding element. Process is esp. useful for bonding CaF2, MgF2 or LiF optical windows into photomultiplier tube bodies. The bonds have the necessary vacuum tightness and are resistant to the alkali metals of which the photocathods of the tube is made. Typically, bonding is carried out with an Al bonding element a 500-600 degrees C and a press. of 100-300 kg/cm2. With an In bonding element, bonding is carried out eg at 20-140 degrees C and a press. of 60-100 kgf/cm2.
