Abstract
Soft drinks are sterilised in a container made of a material which does not form a total screen to microwaves, by subjecting the drink to the action of microwaves of frequency 800 - 22000 MHz pref. during a period between 10 and several tens of seconds and after pretreatment at 40-80 degrees C. The appts. pref. comprises a number of resonant cavities in series forming a tunnel, connected by waveguides and fitted with an antenna connected to a generator of microwaves; a conveyor to transport the containers into the cavity; and a preheater. The process does not call for heating of the soft drnks by the microwaves, the temp. rise brought about by the micro-waves being about 5 degrees C, insufficient to destroy the microorganisms contd. in the drinks. The effect of the microwaves is that the microorganisms do not reproduce. The process is much more rapid than pasteurisation. All the microorganisms are destroyed or neutralised in a few seconds, as are contaminants known for their resistance to high pasteurisation temps., e.g. 20 minutes at 125 degrees C.
