Abstract

Homogeneous blends of copolymer (B) with polymers (A) and/or (C), in which (B) is an ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer with density 0.91 max., (A) is low density PE and/or a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl ester, unsatd. aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or its alkyl ester, and (C) is crystalline PP, high density PE and/or crystalline polybutene-1. Film is mfd. from the above blends by extruding as tube, rapid cooling with liquid coolant and pref. cross-linking, followed by stretching at 20-100 degrees C, longitudinally between rollers and transversely by interior air pressure, with stretch ratio 50-30:1. Used esp. for packaging of foods, etc. by shrink-wrapping. The films develop satisfactory shrink stress at low temps. and over a wide temp. range. Optical properties, heat sealing and film strength are very good. Films are superior to plasticised PVC and PP heat-shrinkable films, and combine the best features of both.
