Abstract

A multi-cored composite filament of the sheath-core type contains >=2 different polymers. Each core (2) is surrounded by several others. The sheath component (3, 4 and 5) constitutes 35, pref. 10 (5) wt. % of the total polymeric constituents. Most of the cores have a transverse section ranging from approximately quadrilateral to hexagonal, but can range from quadrilateral to nonagonal. The transverse sections of the cores at the edge of the filament (1) are approximately quadrilateral or pentagonal. The core polymer is pref. PET, and the sheath polystyrene or a styrene/vinyl monomer copolymer. The core:sheath intrinsic viscosity ratio is pref. between 0.63 and 1.10. The number of cores is pref. 7-1000, partic. 10-200. The filaments can be used to make leather substitutes, knitted and woven fabrics, felts, filters, paper, and in materials for furniture, decoration, sports areas, medical items, etc.
