Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbon is treated with an alkylating agent under conventional alkylating conditions in the presence of a catalyst consisting of TiF4 on a support contng. surface OH gps. The alkylation reaction is effected at lower temps. with increased throughputs. The catalysts are less corrosive and easier to handle than known catalysts, and are more stable to attack by H2O than the corresponding TiCl4 catalysts. In an example, a TiF4 catalyst was prepd. by treatment of pre-dried gamma-Al2O3 with TiF4 at 310 degrees under N2. Catalyst was then heated to 350 degrees then to 400 degrees to afford the product.
