Abstract

The power-assisted steering system for a motor vehicle incorporates a valve in its hydraulic circuit which controls the flow rate according to the inverse of the vehicle speed. Thus the steering assistance is more powerful when the vehicle speed is low. The steering column operated valve controls flow of hydraulic fluid to a double-acting cylinder which acts on the steering linkage. The hydraulic pump runs at constant speed, and the throttle valve on the input side of the pump is controlled by centrifugal mechanism driven from the vehicle's transmission.
