Abstract

The rotary drum coal cutting machine (1) mounted on slides (4) to travel above a face conveyor (5), has a swinging arm (10) at each end, carrying the cutting drums (13). Each arm tilts about a horizontal axis (16), and a drum is mounted each end of the arm, rotating about an axis (14) parallel to this axis. Each drum has a spiral cutting groove on its cutting face. The two drums on an arm rotate in opposite directions to each other (17, 18). These two arms are swung by a double acting hydraulic ram. Alternatively, each arm may be mounted in turn on an intermediate arm, attached at the other end to a pivot spindle on the end of the machine.
