Abstract

Oil or oily substances are eliminated from surfaces, e.g. ground or water, by adsorption on a solid material, pref. mineral fibres. The mineral fibres are used in the form of mats, slabs or flock and have bulk density 30-120 (30-50)kg/m3. They pref. consists of rock fibres and/or wool, which are cheaper than asbestos. Used for cleaning of oil spills, etc. on land or sea. The process is simple, requires no special equipment and can be used on solid surfaces or water. The oil can subsequently be squeezed out of the absorbent and the latter re-used. Mineral fibres are very light, easily compressed for transport and non-combustible.
