Abstract
The bit is made of a thermoplastic insulation material (a), inside which is an electric resistance heating element (b) and leads (c) feeding element (b) with electricity. Material(a) is pref. glass tube, whereas element(b) is a heater wire, esp. a coiled filament(b1) would on a wire (b2) which has a lower m.pt. than the filament wire(b1) and melts when the bit is heated. Element(b) may alternatively consist of a resistance material sandwiched between two good conducting materials connected to leads(c). One lead is pref. provided with a resistance(d) connected in parallel with a push-button switch(e). Switch(e) is used briefly to short-circuit the resistance to increase the bit temp. for cleaning the surface of the bit, i.e. to remove dross etc.. The glass tube(a) provides complete electrical insulation of the heated bit from electronic components which are soldered using the bit, so no voltage can arise which would destroy the components.
