Abstract

Device for obtaining a sample from slag floating on a bath of metal, e.g. iron or steel during refining, is suspended e.g. on a pole, and its wt. is adjusted so it penetrates the slag to a prescribed depth, which can be altered to suit any depth of slag layer. The pole is pref. provided with a hinge or pivot, the device being rigidly mounted on the free end of the hinge or pivot arm. The device may include a probe used to measure the characteristics of the molten steel and/or to obtain a sample of the steel, the probe being mounted on the end of the pole whereas the slag sampling device is located by an adjustable mounting on the pole. Used e.g. during the refining of steel in a converter, where the end of a pole can be fitted with devices for measuring steel temp.; oxygen activity; and also for removing samples of both the steel and the molten slag.
