Abstract

A roll is employed on each side of the workpiece, which had max. thickness (ho). Each roll consists of a disk with a tapered convex rim and the included angle (alpha) of the taper is 20-60 degrees. The thickness (epsilon) of the edge of the rim is 0.06 ho-0.2 ho (esp. 0.07 ho - 0.16 ho) and epsilon (tan. alpha/2) exceeds 2.3 mm. The length (L) of the taper is pref. (0.2-0.4) x 1 / cos alpha / 2 . (ho - epsilon - tan alpha / 2) ; and the radius of curvature between the taper and the rim exceeds 2.5L. The rim may alternatively have a straight edge. A single pair of rolls is pref. used to from two pairs of grooves, e.g. before splitting a slab longitudinally into three billets. A wide, continuously cast slab can be provided with grooves on each side, the grooves then being used for splitting the slab.
