Abstract

H2S and an organic S cpd. are burned in a reactor to create SO2 and H2S for ultimate recovery of S. The reactor comprises a combustion chamber and a downstream reaction chamber. The combustion chamber has two burners, the first located in a central opening and the second in the annulus defined by the first burner and the opening. A first portion of the H2S stream is burned in the first burner and the organic S cpd. is burned in the second burner. The hot combustion gases pass to a reaction chamber, the remainder of the H2S stream being introduced at the junction between the two chambers. The H2S stream mixes with the gases from the combustion chamber and the resulting prods. can be processed to obtain free S. The process esp. for converting H2S to free S where large amts. of an organic S cpd. which may be contaminated with NH3 and/or hydrocarbons, either liq. or gas, are present.
