Abstract

A combustible effluent is burned in surplus air in a first area (2) of a thermal reaction stage (1), a first acidic gas flow is injected (13, 43) into the combustion fumes in said area (2), a second acidic gas flow is partially burned (9) in a second area (3) of the thermal stage which receives gases from said first zone (2), and with a controlled amount of air (11, 12) so as to achieve an H2?S:SO2? molar ratio of 2:1 in the output gases from a Claus catalytic stage (19) which processes the gas flow from the thermal stage (1), and the acidic gas flow rates between the two areas (2, 3) are adjusted to obtain a flame temperature of over 850 C in said second area (3).
