Abstract

The hydraulic control system is for a ship's steering gear. A rudder post cross-member has radial arms working with rams acting in opposite directions. The rams are connected to a variable-output main pump, whose output is controlled by a double-acting ram whose chambers are supplied by a constant-output auxiliary pump. An electric control in each of the chamber circuits causes the piston to move in one direction or the other, it being automatically returned to the starting position. The piston only moves from the starting position when pressure in one of the chambers exceeds a threshold value.
