Abstract

Glass articles having a high rupture strength and antistatic surface properties, i.e. low surface resistivity are made by chemically quenching and reheating the articles at a temp. below their stress relief temp. and coating the articles immediately with a powdered metal cpd. which pyrolyses on contact with the hot surface to form a conductive oxide layer. Used in sheet of glass in the cockpit of an aircraft, near electronic instruments, esp. those controlling the aircraft flight. The antistatic layer formed avoids build up on the glass surface of electrostatic fields which can disturb the performance of the instruments, and even produce dangerous sparks when a fluid (air) passes over the surface of the glass rapidly as is the case with the cockpit cover.
