Abstract
A method of carrying out peritoneal dialysis, in which a liq. is injected into and extracted from the peritoneal cavity by means of a catheter, incorporates connecting the end of the catheter outside the peritoneal cavity to the interior of a closed pocket formed artificially under the skin, introducing a trocar through the skin into the pocket and injecting and extracting the liq. by the trocar. The liq. allows the impurities in the blood circulating in the blood vessels of the peritoneum to be absorbed by osmotic migration through the peritoneum. It is extracted when it is charged with impurities. Pref. the external wall of the pocket is a plastic material esp. a silicone based material.. Pref. the internal chamber is also formed by a plastic material. Pref. the pocket is enclosed in an envelope of ethylene polyterephthalate for implantation. Problems associated with the existing technique are avoided. These arise because the end of the catheter passing permanently through teh abdomen is not well tolerated by the patient on a psychological level and constitute an entry for germs.
