Abstract

A method of sublimation printing on cotton canvas or on polyester, giving exact colour reproduction of dyeings on cotton or wool embroidery, is characterised by printing a sublimable ink on an intermediate support which conforms, when hot, to the profile of the canvas. The canvas rests on an equally deformable support, which prevents its being crushed. Stencil or silk-screen printing requires successive applications of each of the columns. Sublimation printing markedly reduces the number of passages needed for a complex design. Printing of canvas usually leads to crushing of the fibres and consequent snagging or tearing of embroidered cotton or wool; this process overcomes the fault. Finally, accurate colour rendering of a model analysed through colour filters is not possible, because the colour selection is made from the GEU (Europeen Unifiee) range, to which sublimable dyes do not correspond; the method also overcomes this difficulty.
