Abstract

The counterbalanced hinge may be used on commercial chest freezers with horizontal lids (7) pivoting about a long edge. A precompressed tubular rubber strut (15) provides the counterbalancing effect. The strut (15) is mounted in a casing (3) fixed to the chest (4) and exerts a force on a pivoting member (5) which is fixed to the lid. The strut is mounted about a rocking shaft (8) which guides it during extension and retraction. The strut may be built up from a series of co-axial and identical rings and may be of natural vulcanised rubber. The foot and head of the shaft may be connected to the casing and the member.
