Abstract
Roasted coffee in the form of flat flakes is prepd. by grinding a first quantity relatively finely and a second quantity separately more coarsely; these quantities are then passed through crushing-rolls to produce flat flakes or scales. The relatively fine material shows >=75% passing a 1.19 mm mesh sieve and >=40% passing a 0.84 mm sieve. The more coarsely ground coffee has >=10% retained on a 1.19 mm sieve and >=60% retained on a 0.84mm sieve. The ratio of the fine to the coarse material is 1:4 to 4:1; pref. 1:2 and 2:1. Such a mixt. when passed between the crushing-rolls produces a coffee with a satisfactory strength and an acceptable solids content. The coffee in the form of flattened flakes is suitable for use in automatic coffee machines. The grading allows of a satisfactory extn. of the infused solids together with a uniform flow of the water through the coffee being extracted.
