Abstract

The presence or absence of a magnetic tape(5) in a proximity of a read or write head is determined by an electro-optic system. A light source(3) projects a beam through a focussing lens(4) into a prism(1). The prism has a superior surface against which a cylindrical lens(2) abuts. In the absence of a tape, light entering the prism(1) leaves through the cylindrical lens(2) whereas, when tape is present, total internal reflection occurs. In the latter case, light escapes from an inferior surface of the prism(1) to be detected by a control transducer(13) of the recorder. An optical beam splitter(10) permits observation by a user of tape stacks.
