Abstract

The hand-operated winch has a clutch, a ratchet-wheel and pawl control, and a quick-release mechanism. The winch (17) anchors a cable (9) to a ventilation trap-door (6) which is constrained towards the open position by e.g. pneumatic jack (7). The clutch and the ratchet system (15) combine to provide a controlled release or a rewind to set the trap (6) at any desired inclination for ventilation purposes, and the quick-release mechanism allows the trap (6) to open fully to release smoke in the event of a fire. The winch (17) is located in a wall-mounted housing (11) at a convenient height from the floor. The clutch may comprise a spirally threaded hub engaging the bore of the winding drum, and reverse rotation effects displacement and disengagement from the ratchet wheel. The pawl may comprise a vertically slideable bolt and may be disengaged by smashing a glass pane (14). The removal of the pane (14) releases the free end of a pivoting plate which catches the head of the bolt, and the bolt moves up into a disengaged position under the action of a coil spring.
