Abstract
A flowable, smoke-forming pyrotechnic compsn., yielding a coloured smoke, comprises a synthetic resin and an oxidant, the latter being (a) is not 1 of Na or K chlorate or perchlorate, or NH4 perchlorate and (b) is not 1 of guanidine nitrate or a metallic oxide. Pref. compsns. are (a) a cpd. from the first gp., esp. K chlorate, with a guanidine nitrate and (b) an oxidant including is not 1 of Fe2O3, MnO2, NiO or CuO. Pref. resins are condensn. prods. of epoxypropanol with a polyalcohol, esp, glycerol or ethyleneglycol, or of a diglycidyl ether and an aliphatic dialcohol, esp. the diglycidyl ether of 1,4 butanediol. The compsns. also contain a sublimable organic colorant. Pref. compsn. (by wt.) is 20-50% oxidant, 10-35% epoxyaliphatic resin, 0-15% organic plasticiser, 25-50% colorant, 0-5% >=1 metal oxide catalyst. The compsn. is used to produce long-lasting (e.g. 5-10 min.) coloured smokes. Nitrates, chlorates and perchlorates alone need a temp. of is not 400 degrees C for reaction, which leads to unduly rapid decomposition of the colorant. This method adheres rapid sublimation at a relatively low temp. at which the resin is combustible, without producing compact or abundant residues.
