Abstract

Extrusion and calibration dies for extruding profiles of partially expanded plastic materials are designed so that the initial expansion of the material is directed inwards and subsequent expansion is direct outwards. The first expansion is achieved by used of an extrusion die having a core mandrel to produce a hollow profile which can expand radially inwards as it leaves the tapered downstream end of the core mandrel. The second expansion stage is achieved by extrusion from a die smaller than the required final profile size into a calibration die of larger cross-section i.e. corresp. to the final required size and shaped. Used for extrusion of solid or hollow profiles having a smooth, grained surface and a core structure which can be fabricated or fastened like wood. Esp. suitable for mfr. of assymertic profiles or profiles of low density (down to 0.3 g/cm3) or having thin wall sections (3mm).
