Abstract

A drying unit for a continuous web of paper comprises at least two drying drums some distance from each other. The circumference of the drums are enclosed by cowls which are positioned relatively to each other so as to form between them, an intermediate zone for the passage of the continuous web of paper. This zone contains an outlet guide for the web at one end and an inlet guide on to the next drying drum at the other end. In this zone also there is an arrangement of floating air distributors located on the opposing gaces of the passage through which the paper moves. These are positioned relatively to each other so that they form pneumatic forces acting on the opposing gaces of paper in equilibrium. The continuous web is thus stabilised and passes through the intermediate zone without floating. Appts. is applicable to very high speed paper drying units, permitting working at a range of speeds which have not been possible previously due to the tendency of the web to float and tear. In the case of breakage of the web, the sections of the cowl can be lifted, the web rethreaded and the cowls replaced without difficulty and with the minimum of downtime.
