Abstract

An injection moulding machine features two separate reciprocating screw plasticisation units which converge on to the axis of sprue passage leading from a mutual screw discharge chamber to the mould cavity. Aligned with the sprue passage is a piston which can advance to seal the passage and maintain the moulding consolidation or dwell pressure while the screw units are able to retract and masticate fresh material for the next shot. Suitable in principle for injection moulding thermoplastic, thermosetting or elastomeric materials. The minimum cycle time is not restricted by the period necessary for mastication of material. Hot residence times and consequent degradation can be minimised by matching the screw throughput capacity to individual alternate shots. The piston provides a better moving seal than a flighted screw.
