Abstract
Prim. cell, using a separator made of regenerated cellulose and located between an anode and cathode, all three being impregnated with an electrolyte with pH below 6. Cathode pref. uses a slurry of active particles with a hydrophilic polymer, and with a cathode current collector of carbon dispersed in a thermoplastic matrix; the slurry is a dispersion of MnO2 and carbon in an aq., electrolyte soln. of NH4Cl and/or ZnCl2, the separator being bonded to the slurry. The wt. ratio of MnO2:C is 6-12:1, and pref. 8:1 in the second cathode, the slurry contg. min. 20% water without forming a liq. film between the slurry and the conducting plastic. Several cells pref. form a thin, flat laminar battery, where he cells are sepd. by a collector layer impermeable to liq. Anode is pref. a flat Zn cake covered by an acid gel electrolyte. A thin battery with increased yield and longer storage capacity, e.g. for rapid charging of an electronic flash lamp or other use requiring high current.
