Abstract

Process for the cleaning of boilers or furnaces by the injection of ammonia vapour into the bottom of the boiler or furnace. Hot water vapour is sprayed in small quantities through nozzles placed in openings at the top of the boiler. When the water vapour begins to condense and to flow out the pH is measured and the flow of water vapour and ammonia is adjusted so that the pH does not fall below 7.4. During the course of the cleaning operation the flow of water vapour is steadily increased while that of the ammonia vapour is decreased. The cleaning operation is short compared to previously known methods, it being possible to clean 5000 m2 of boiler surface in less than 50 hrs. Relatively small amts. of ammonia are required. The assembly of the cleaning appts. in the boiler is much simpler than previously used arrangements. The ammonia is injected at a pressure of >=3 bars and pref. >=6 bars. The water vapour is preheated to 400-600 degrees C. The ammonia soln. used contains 25% ammonia. The duration of the vapour treatment is about 12 hrs. After the vapour treatment the boiler is sprayed strongly with water from the nozzles for about a day.
