Abstract

The spreading machine may be used in highway maintenance e.g. distributing salt and grit over frozen carriageway surfaces. It can spread either solids or liquids and is now adapted to spread intermediate materials e.g. paste. The machine comprises a sealed hopper (2) mounted over an archimedean screw (7) on a trailer chassis (1). The screw (7) transports stored material from the hopper (3) to a vertical outfall tube (8). The tube (8) opens onto a rotary vaned (15) distributor plate (14) and includes a valve (19). A small bore diversion tube (20), of which the section is controlled by a second valve, leads from the tube above the first valve to outfall on the distributor. The diversion tube includes a volumetric pump (26), driven by a motor (27) and provided to circulate liquid or paste produce. The pump (26) may be driven by a hydraulic motor (27) and may act with a separate single purpose delivery divider (28).
