Abstract
In the prepn. of 2,2'-benzothiazyldisulphide (I) by addn. of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (II) with Cl2 at 20-75 degrees C, separate streams of Cl2 and an aq. soln. of an alkali salt (esp. Na salt) of (II) are fed simultaneously below the surface of a vigorously stirred aq. medium at such a rate that the instantaneous concn. of each of the reactants at any time is zero. The pH of the aq. medium is maintained at 6 - 9 during the reaction by the addn. of aq. alkali hydroxide soln. (esp. NaOH) and the resulting (I) is recovered by filtration. Process gives high yields of (I) with a low level of contamination by (II). (I) is esp. useful as a vulcanisation accelerator for rubber, where the low level of (I) is important for preventing scorching of the rubber.
