Abstract

The rivet making machine has a reciprocating arm (11) which combines the functions of cutting and transfer, thus simplifying the mechanism. A plate (27) on the head of the arm incorporates a circular cutter (32) and a fork (34). The plate may reduce in thickness over the forked section. A piece of continuously fed wire is first moved into the cutter (32), and the arm (11) advances to shear off the piece. The arm now pauses for the piece to be extracted by a needle punch and pressed into form. During this advance the previously formed rivet has been picked up by the fork (34), and a further advance of the arm (11) ejects the rivet. The cycle now repeats. A cranked (45) lever (44) engaging a stop (54) may carry out ejection, and the arm (11) may be advanced by a rocking lever (13-17) controlled by a three track cam (18, 19, 21-23).
