Abstract

982,428. Buckle threading apparatus. J. & P. JACOBS Ltd. Sept. 23, 1963 [Sept. 22, 1962], No. 36113/62. Heading E2A. A machine for threading brassiere strapping through an adjusting buckle comprises a holder 16 carrying a buckle 17, four pushers 6a, 7a, 12a, 13a, biased to neutral positions clear of the buckle but movable to pass through holes in the buckle, and a bar 19 for ejecting the buckle from the holder 16 and inserting another from a magazine 21. When using a hand machine, Fig. 2, an operator puts one end of strapping, cut to desired length and carrying a ring, across the buckle 17, depresses a handle 3b forcing the pusher 12a and strapping through the first hole in the buckle 17 and releases the handle 3b allowing spring 3f to return pusher 12a to its neutral position. Handle 24a is then moved from left to right causing wiper 24 to place the strapping under the second hole so that lifting handle 2b pushes the strapping up through the hole, then the pusher 7a falls back when released. Knee pad 26a is next operated moving arm 26 to hold the free end of the strapping clear of the second hole so that the other end, when placed over the buckle, can be pushed through the second hole by depressing handle 2b, moved under the first hole by wiper 24 and pushed up through it by lifting handle 3b. Knee pad 19b is finally operated to move rod 19 forward, ejecting the threaded buckle and carrying another in recess 19a into position between the jaws of holder 16, before being returned by spring 22. In an automatic machine, Fig. 4, (not shown) the parts are actuated by cams which may be mounted on a common rotating shaft. Strapping is supplied from a roll 49, Fig. 5, through a guide 50 under a weight 51 therein to an opening 52a in frame 52 thence through curved guide 54, a ring in holder 55 and a gate 56 to gripper 33, Fig. 7. When the desired length has passed a cam actuated guillotine 53 cuts the strapping, the gate 56 having been lifted just before for the arm 56a to raise the strapping enough to pull the ring clear of the holder 55. During cutting an arm 53a extending from the guillotine 53 contacts an arm 58a, reciprocating a stop member 58 to allow another ring to fall down the shoot 59. Another ram reciprocates a carriage Fig. 6 (not shown) under the guide 50 so that an inclined needle thereon moves the cut end of the supply of strapping forward to be gripped at the beginning of a new cycle. The gripper 33 slides to and fro between the ring holder 55 and the buckle holder 16 on a bar 34, drawn by an endless chain 36 driven by a motor controlled by switch 46 which also controls a solenoid 45 for closing the jaws 44 of the gripper 33. A cam 42 rocks the frame 35 carrying the gripper mechanism towards the holder 16 for the buckle 17 while the gripper 33 is carrying each end of the strapping in turn towards the buckle and rocks the frame 35 away from the holder 16 while the gripper is moving back towards the ring holder to fetch another end.
