Abstract

The SO2 content of a gas stream is continuously reduced, where the gas travels at a speed (S) at least 1 foot/second faster than the min. fluidising speed of a bed of fine coal and solid diluent in a reactor fed with the gas; but speed is slow enough to prevent fine material being carried out of the bed. The reaction zone is held at 593-1093 degrees, esp. 704-982 degrees C and coal is fed continuously into the bed; the gaseous prods. are continuously removed for the winning of sulphur. The pref. coal is brown coal; sub-bituminous coal; bituminous coal; and/or anthracite; whereas the filuent is pref. sand.
