Abstract

The drum brake assembly on a vehicle wheel includes a mounting flange (5) which is located at the axial centre plane of the brake shoes (1, 2). The flange is fixed by the four wheel hub bolts which also locate the brake drum. A radial lug on the flange protrudes into the gap between two neighbouring brake shoe ends. The lug carries a forked spacer bracket (4) which provides the pivot points for the brake shoe ends. The bracket also locates a cam shaped rachet wheel which provides brake adjustment that is required to compensate brake shoe whear. The axially offset edges of the mounting flange provide axial support on the radial web of the brake shoes.
