Abstract

The distress balloon consists of a sealed capsule (1) fitted with a float (2). The capsule has a hood (3) which seals off the balloon stored in a deflated condition. The balloon (5) is fitted to a base which is connected to an air tube (7) and a pipe (8) which connects with a helium tank (9). The capsule also contains a radio transmitter (10) driven by a battery (11). The balloon is inflated using the heated resistance (4) fitted around the cover. The air leak through the pipe (7) stabilises the setting out altitude of the balloon.
