Abstract
A support roll assembly in a continuous casting assembly to support cast product comprises two rows of parallel rolls delimiting the path for the cast product. The rolls in the first row are supported on a chassis and the rolls in the second row are moved towards the first roll by means of jacks or springs. The roll bearings of the second row are supported on the bearings of the first new rolls either directly or indirectly by means of spacer bearings. The jacks or springs and the support bearings are arranged so as to exert on the rolls couples creating in each roll a bending movement opposing that caused by the pressure of liquid metal in the cast product. The sepn. between rolls can be reduced together with the extent of deformation of the product so that smaller diameter rolls than conventional can be used. Alternatively the number of rolls can be reduced by increasing their separation so that there is a greater area of product available for cooling.
