Abstract

The spark ignition reciprocating engine has an additional auxiliary cylinder for every two working cylinders. Each additional cylinder has a cross sectional area at least twice that of the working cylinders and contains a piston connected to the same crankshaft as the working pistons. The timing is arranged so that the working cylinder exhaust valves open earlier than normal. the gases at a slightly higher pressure than normal are transferred to the auxiliary cylinder in which they are expanded further to a pressure lower than that obtainable in a conventional engine.
