Abstract
Steel prodn. in an electric furnace takes place with the addn. of MgO, or of a material contg. MgO as its main constituent, together with the main charge materials. Addn. of MgO causes formation of a basic slag and reduces the wear and erosion of the refractory brick lining of the melt furnace and of the ladle lining. Frequent work interruptions for repair are obviated and steel prodn. costs are reduced without changing steel components.
