Abstract

Temp. raising device, capable of dealing with liqs. or gases either corrosive or not, comprises a shaft rotating in a PTFE bearing; heat is produced without seizing and may be used for the generation of steam or for distn. The shaft rotates in the bearing which is mounted in a rigid steel bushing. The shaft has turbines at each end; a pump, which may be on he same shaft, sends the liq. under pressure between the shaft and the bearing and a packing seals the front part of the appts. The heat generated by the friction of the shaft in the bearingg is carried by the liq. which is evacuated at the outlet where a valve adjusts the output accoding to the temp. required; this can vary between 30 and 200 degrees. This temp. is limited only by the characteristics of the PTFE used. This simple system for transforming work into heat can be used for pasteurisation, sterilisation or vapourisation of the liq. treated. The small turbine renews the pressure of the liq. at the outlet. For distn., this turbine communicates with the hollow portion of the shaft whilst the larger turbine creates a reduced pressure in the shaft; the valve is adjusted so that the liq. boils. The vapours rise and are sucked out by the larger turbine; the shaft then acts as a heat exchanger the hot vapour condenses and heats the entering liq. Device is of a novel conception and is simple but robust. The yield is high because PTFE is an excellent insulator; there is practically no wear.
