Abstract
A process for sepg. paraffin sulphonic acids contained in a sulphonic soln. with sulphuric acid, water and opt. non-sulphonated paraffins is provided. A weakly polar organic solvent is added to form an organic phase contg. all the sulphonic acids and an aq. phase contg. almost all the sulphuric acid. The organic solvent is an aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic ether, ketone, ester or ketoester of >=5C atoms, the solvent forms an azeotrope with water and has a water solubility 7%. The aq. phase is sepd. The organic phase is neutralised evapd. to remove volatiles to recover the molten sulphonates which are then opc. converted to a powder. The prods. are biologically degradable detergents. Compared with a previous process using a weakly polar alcohol as solvent, the above solvents have the advantage of a greater volatility, and ensure all the sulphonic acid is in the solvent phase. The process enables a practically anhydrous sulphonic acid to be isolated, easily converted to a non-caking powder.
