Dans le moteur de Gramme à courant continu, le collecteur-inverseur de courant continu autour du rotor est supprimé. Il est remplacé par un courant solénoïdal à sens unique. Mais les deux pôles du stator doivent alors être obligatoirement de même nom, au lieu d'être de noms contraires, comme dans le dispositif de Gramme.
