Abstract

Bitumen compsns. comprise (a) a pasty bitument emulsion and (b) an epoxy resin system consisting of (i) a curable epoxy resin and (ii) a hardener or hardener/plasticizer for the resin which is capable of curing the resin in the presence of the water in (a). Pref compsns. contain 5-50 (esp. 7-20) wt.% of an epoxy resin with a mol. wt. 250-350. The epoxy resin is pref. an aliphatic epoxy resin made by condensing an aliphatic glycol with epichlorhydrin. Suitable hardeners are (poly)amides R.CH2.CONH2 in which R is a 7-22C alkyl gp. Suitable hardener/plasticisers are (poly)amide/alkenes R-CH2-CO-NH2/R'-(CH=CH)-R= in which R,R1 and R" are each 7-22C alkyl. gps. The wt. ratio (poly) amide to alkene is pref. 4:1 to 2:1 and the compsn. pref. contains 2.5-25 wt.% hardener or hardener/plasticizer. The prods. can be used at ambient temp. and cure to materials with a high cohesive strength and resistance to liquids, including corrosive liquids such as acids. The prods. are useful in road making, building applications, cable coverings, container linings, sealing compsns. etc.
