Abstract
An explosive shell has a latch mechanism held in a locked position before firing, which is released after firing, and held in an inoperative position due to the spin of the shell during its course. The mechanism permits a self destructive action to take place when the spin falls below a given amount, indicating that the target has not been struck. The mechanism has four arms arranged in a rectangle, with hinge pins at their connection points. Attached to the hinge pin is a hooked arm which is released from a position with the hook fitting around a spindle at the middle so that it is flung outwards by spin. When the spin falls, it is returned to the inwards position, assisted by springs acting on the arms, but allowing the spindle in the centre to be operated, resulting in actuation of the explosive charge.
