Abstract

The tapping or threading machine comprises a headstock (3) carrying a chuck (5) and is connected to the leadscrew (15) through a chain of gears (7) and a clutch (9, 13) with a single driving dog. The leadscrew operates the carriage (19) in the forward direction. For rapid return, a power cylinder (27) is fitted into the carriage. This cylinder is single acting and operated hydraulically or hydropneumatically. The piston rod (29) is fixed to the bed (1), the cylinder moving over it when pressure is applied by a pump (31). The cylinder can be used in the forward direction to engage the clutch; a restrictor valve (37) controlling this operation.
