Abstract

Catalysts for steam reforming of 2-12C hydrocarbons to produce a CH4-contg. gas comprise Ni and/or Co oxide, La and/or Ce oxide and Al2O3, and are prepd. by washing a mixed hydroxide and/or carbonate precursor with H2O followed by drying, grinding, moulding and calcining. The catalyst precursor is prepd. by (a) adding an alkaline soln. to a soln. of an Al salt, then (b) adding an alkaline soln. to a soln. of a La and/or Ce salt in the presence of the ppte. formed in (a), and then (c) adding an alkaline soln. to a soln. of a Ni and/or Co salt in the presence of the ppte. formed in (b). The 3-stage pptn. process gives increased intimate contact between the components of the catalyst compared with conventional coprecipitation. This increases the activity of the catalyst and also reduces coke deposition.
