Abstract

The multi-head machine tool has several heads for diverse machining functions and a single machining post. In operative heads are mounted remote from the machining post and advanced to the post in a predetermined sequence, which is auto-programmed with the advance of a head being synchronised with the withdrawal of that previously deployed. The heads are handled by a transverse transfer mechanism and the system combines whigh production cadence with versatility. Each head has a spindle which acts as a vertical drive shaft at the machining post and aligns horizontally to locate the head on the transfer mechanism. The heads are guided during transfer and the guides (14) are terminally connected to form a closed transfer circuit. The transfer mechanism inc. two pivoting portals (29, 30) which orientate the head after advance and before retraction resp. Each head projects from a base plate with latch notches which are engaged by lugs on a jack-actuated slide.
