Abstract

Ethylene is polymerised at a pressure of >400 atmos and 100-300 degrees C using tert. butyl perneodecanoate (I) as initiator. Polymerisation is pref. in >=2 zones, at a pressure of 400-3000 atmos. I is used in the first zone, at 130-210 degrees C I is pref. added as a 5-40% soln. in isodecane (pref.) or isododecane. The initiator has high activity and low activation energy the radicals formed are stable. A wide range of solvents can be used for I. High flow rates can be attained during polymerisation under stable reaction conditions. The ethylene (co) polymers have better properties. The polyethylene can be processed to films or cables, or can be injected or blown.
