Abstract
A unit for measuring and controlling the speed and the variations in speed of a shaft, is esp. applicable to plant such as a cooling water pump in a nuclear installation. It includes a detector responding to the passage in front of it of a spur fixed to the shaft, by putting out an impulse, a timer generating impulses also and counter for the impulses. The counters are connected to the timer for the durations of a complete revolution of the shaft; the detector emitting an impulse for the opening of the counters on the first passage of the spur and a closing impulse on the second passage of the spur in front of it. The number of impulses recorded in the counters is thus proportional to the time required by the shaft to make a complete revolution. Circuits are connected to the counters, which, starting from the time of revolution, measure the speed of the shaft and any variation in the speed and control of these.
